The gap

Why this program exists.

There's a gap between what kids are told about learning and what the science actually says.

"Pay attention."

But nobody teaches them that attention is a measurable, limited resource with three distinct types, each one drainable.

"Study harder."

But the research is clear: the way most kids study (re-reading, highlighting, cramming) is the least effective method. And the most effective method (retrieval practice with spaced repetition) is almost never taught.

"Be empathetic."

But perspective-taking is a cognitive skill that requires practice. It's not a personality trait you either have or don't.

No other program in the Philippines closes this gap for children ages 7 to 12.

The week, day by day.

Monday through Friday, 3 hours per session. Live experiments, data collection, tool construction. Every minute is designed, sequenced, and purposeful.

Day 1

The Attention Engine

Attention as a limited budget, not a character trait. Selective attention tasks, inattentional blindness tests, change blindness, the cocktail party effect. They measure how their own attention works, where it breaks, and how screens are designed to spend it without their permission.

They build

A personal Focus Protocol: a specific sequence for getting into and maintaining concentration, designed from their own experimental data.

Day 2

Memory Lab

The full memory pipeline: encoding, consolidation, retrieval. Why cramming fails, why re-reading is a trap, why testing yourself is the single most effective study strategy the research has found. The testing effect, the spacing effect, and the illusion of competence. A simplified memory palace technique.

They build

A personal Study Strategy Kit based on how their memory actually performed during the experiments.

Day 3

The Perspective Machine

Two people look at the same situation and reach completely different conclusions. Ambiguous scenario exercises, the curse-of-knowledge demonstration (the tapping game), perspective-taking challenges. Theory of mind: the science of understanding why other people think differently.

They build

"The Translator": a four-step framework for decoding disagreements by identifying the information gap between two perspectives.

Day 4

The Stress Lab

They measure their own performance curve under increasing pressure (the Yerkes-Dodson curve). Some stress helps; too much shuts the brain down. Stress inoculation through controlled exposure. Recovery science: what to do after the stressful event, not just during it.

They build

A Recovery Protocol: a complete stress management system covering before, during, and after.

Day 5

Brain Architect

Experimenting on their own thinking. They measure calibration (the gap between confidence and accuracy), practice cognitive flexibility (adapting when rules change), and develop self-monitoring (catching their own cognitive errors in real time). Metacognition: thinking about thinking.

They build

A Brain Dashboard: a personal metacognitive checklist integrating all five days (attention, memory, perspective, stress, and calibration checks) before making important decisions.

Graduate-level cognitive neuroscience training from Switzerland. BSc Psychology Cum Laude. Former university lecturer. Former school psychologist. Amelia has spent her career at the intersection of how the brain works and how to teach people to use that knowledge.

She designs and facilitates every session personally. Her style is experiential: kids do the activity first, discover the pattern, then learn the science behind it. Every exercise connects directly to peer-reviewed research on how the developing brain processes emotion, social information, and decisions. Students consistently rate her sessions among the most engaging they've attended in any setting.

Scope and boundaries

The Brain Lab is a group cognitive neuro-performance program. It teaches children an applied introduction of how their brain processes attention, memory, perspective, stress, and metacognition, and gives them concrete tools based on that science. It is grounded in peer-reviewed neuroscience research and delivered by a cognitive neuroscientist. It is not therapy, counseling, or clinical intervention. It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Food is not included; participants bring their own snacks. Purified water is available at the venue.

Questions

Common questions.

Does my child need to have attended a previous camp?

No. The Brain Lab is designed so that all participants can follow every day without prior knowledge. Each concept is self-contained. That said, returning campers will feel the progression immediately: every day explicitly builds on previous camps content, and the tools they built before get upgraded. Both groups get the full experience.

My child is 7. Will they keep up with the older kids?

Yes. Amelia adapts every activity for the full age range. Younger children use more physical, hands-on versions of the experiments. Older children get pushed into deeper causal reasoning and more complex challenges. The science stays the same; the access point changes.

My child is 12. Won't this be too young for them?

The cognitive neuroscience concepts in this program (metacognition, calibration, the testing effect, stress inoculation) are topics that graduate students study. We make them accessible to children without making them childish. Older participants get challenged to design experiment variations, handle numerical data, and reason about why the results look the way they do.

Why is it 3 hours instead of 4 like previous camps?

The Brain Lab is pure experiential neuroscience: live experiments, data collection, tool construction. There are no camp-type activities. Three hours of concentrated cognitive work with 9 children is an intense, immersive experience.

Is food or snacks included?

The venue is an executive meeting room at Regus (a professional coworking space), which reinforces the "lab" identity of the program. Participants bring their own snacks for breaks. Purified water is available on site.

What do they take home?

Five personalized tools (one per day), a Lab Notebook documenting their experiments and findings, and a graduation certificate. The tools are built from their own data.
