The reason your child can't see your side of the argument
When your child acts like they're the only person in the room, their brain is doing exactly what brains do before a specific cognitive skill kicks in.
Your 9-year-old and their sibling are fighting over whose turn it is to pick the show. You explain, clearly and patiently, that it's the other child's turn. Your 9-year-old looks at you like you've said something absurd. They heard your words, they understood the sentence, but their brain couldn't run the operation you were asking for.
You were asking them to hold their own desire in mind, simultaneously model what their sibling wants, compare the two perspectives, and then prioritize someone else's position over their own. That's 4 cognitive operations running in sequence, and the neural architecture that coordinates them is still under construction.
This is perspective-taking. It's a measurable cognitive skill, grounded in specific brain circuits, that develops through practice.
What perspective-taking actually requires
Developmental psychologists call this capacity "theory of mind": the ability to represent someone else's mental state as distinct from your own.
The classic test is the Sally-Anne task, first used by Simon Baron-Cohen, Alan Leslie, and Uta Frith in 1985. A child watches Sally hide a marble in a basket. Sally leaves. Anne moves the marble to a box. The question: where will Sally look for the marble?
To answer correctly, the child has to separate what they know (the marble is in the box) from what Sally knows (she left it in the basket). Most 4-year-olds get this wrong. By age 5 or 6, most get it right.
But passing the Sally-Anne task is just the starting line, since real-world perspective-taking is far more complex than tracking a marble. It involves reading emotional states, inferring motivations, accounting for incomplete information, and recognizing that two people can look at identical facts and reach completely different conclusions.
The prefrontal cortex and the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) coordinate this work. The prefrontal cortex handles the executive function side: inhibiting your own perspective to make room for someone else's. The TPJ processes social inference: modeling what the other person likely believes. Both regions continue developing well into adolescence.
Why "be empathetic" doesn't work as an instruction
When adults tell a child to "think about how the other person feels," they're issuing an instruction the child may not yet have the cognitive machinery to execute fluently.
Elizabeth Dunn at the University of British Columbia has shown that even adults struggle with perspective-taking under cognitive load. When your working memory is taxed (you're tired or stressed), perspective-taking is one of the first functions to degrade. It's computationally expensive for the brain.
For children, the cost is higher. Their prefrontal cortex is less myelinated, which means signals travel slower. Their working memory capacity is smaller, which means they can hold fewer variables at once.
Asking a 7-year-old to spontaneously model another person's perspective mid-argument is like asking them to do long division in their head while running.
They can learn to do it. But it takes deliberate practice, not a lecture.
How perspective-taking develops through practice
Rebecca Saxe at MIT has demonstrated that the TPJ becomes more active with deliberate practice in perspective-taking tasks. The brain area doesn't just mature on a preset schedule. It responds to use.
Structured exercises work. Ambiguous scenario tasks (where the same situation can be read two ways) force the brain to hold competing interpretations simultaneously. The "tapping game" (where one person taps a song and the other tries to guess it) demonstrates the curse of knowledge: the tapper thinks the song is obvious because they can hear it in their head. The guesser has no idea. Kids experience firsthand that knowing something makes it almost impossible to imagine not knowing it.
These are controlled exposures that build the neural circuitry for perspective-taking the same way math drills build arithmetic fluency. And the skill transfers.
Children who practice structured perspective-taking in one context show improved performance in new social situations they've never rehearsed.
What parents can do
Name the skill explicitly. Try framing disagreements as information gaps: "What information does your sister have that you don't? What do you know that she doesn't?" This turns an emotional demand into a cognitive task the child can actually work through.
Debrief conflict after the heat drops. The prefrontal cortex can't run complex social reasoning during emotional arousal. Wait until the limbic system calms down (usually 20 to 30 minutes), then walk through the situation: "What did you think was happening? What do you think your brother thought was happening? Where was the gap?"
Practice with low-stakes scenarios. Use stories, movies, or hypothetical situations where the child can analyze perspectives without being emotionally involved. "Why do you think that character did that? What did they know that the other character didn't?"
The goal is repetitions, the same principle as learning an instrument or a sport. Perspective-taking improves through accumulated practice across many situations, not through a single conversation about being kind.
